Jim Seghers was born in New Orleans. He was raised in a devout Catholic family and found early inspiration from the example of his parents. In one form or another, Jimmy has devoted much of his life to the pursuit of learning, teaching, and mentorship.
Jim joined the seminary after his sophomore year in high school. He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College with majors in Philosophy, History, Education, and Classical Languages. He followed this by completing a four-year graduate program at St. Mary’s in Theology and Sacred Scripture, and earned a Master’s Degree in History from DePaul University. Subsequently, he taught for 4 years at St. Vincent's, a high school located in the Chicago suburbs, and also served as the Prefect of Discipline and basketball coach.
After leaving his teaching career (temporarily, as it turned out), Jim served as the Managing Partner of one of Los Angeles’ largest financial service firms. He managed a large regional sales office, and addressed numerous audiences in the U.S. and abroad on subjects related to career development, personal growth, sales, and management. In his managerial role, he mentored many professionals who went on to develop highly successful and distinguished careers. Finally, after 20 years in the business, he took an early retirement so that he could devote himself full-time to his family and to developing a lay Catholic ministry. That year (1995), he permanently relocated back home to the New Orleans area.
Since then, Jim has taught Sacred Scripture and Apologetics (that is, the defense of the Catholic faith). Jim frequently gives retreats, parish missions, and talks on biblical subjects. He is seen on FOCUS with Lisa Flood discussing biblical and religious topics. His classes are approved by the Archdiocese of New Orleans for certification credits for religion teachers. Each week, Jim is heard on the Radio Maria network. He can also be heard each morning on Catholic Community Radio as he gives the daily Gospel reflection. His essays have been published in This Rock, the Clarion-Herald, and he contributed to a catechetical series published by Ave Maria University Press. His most recent book is The Fullness of Truth: A Handbook for Understanding and Explaining the Catholic Faith Biblically. He also has created a completely free video series Understanding Catholicism to be used by anyone as a tool to teach or learn the faith.
Michelle Seghers was a homeschool mom for over 28 years and also served as the Youth Minister at St. Peter Parish. Besides supporting the Totus Tuus Ministry as an Event Coordinator, she also provides event planning support to the Conference Coordinator for Magnificat Ministry as their Conference Planner.
In 1995, Jim and Michelle formed Totus Tuus Ministries, Inc., a non-profit corporation devoted to evangelizing Catholics. He and Michelle are the parents of nine children.
